Algarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce that we are offering virtual Spanish classes this fall! Spanish for Social Justice courses are offered by Algarabía Language Co-op in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer courses at the BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, and ADVANCED levels of fluency to those interested in topics of social justice, politics, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes, and using a communicative and popular education approach, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in New York City (Lenapehoking), one of the largest and most diverse Spanish-speaking cities in the world and the rest of Turtle Island and Abya Yala. To register, click HERE Fall 2024 COURSE SCHEDULE: VIRTUAL COURSES (24 HOURS; 8 WEEKS) Saturdays, October 12, 2024 - December 7th, 2024 (One week off) Spanish I: Spanish for Social Justice True Beginner - Español nivel básico introductorio Virtual on Zoom Saturdays, 10:00am-1:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Spanish II: Spanish for Social Justice High Beginner - Español nivel básico elevado Virtual on Zoom Saturdays, 2:00pm-5:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Spanish III: Spanish for Social Justice Low Intermediate - Español nivel intermedio-básico Virtual on Zoom Saturdays, 10:00am-1:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Spanish IV: Spanish for Social Justice High Intermediate - Español nivel intermedio alto Virtual on Zoom Saturdays, 2:00pm-5:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Spanish V: Spanish for Social Justice Advanced Level - Español para bilingües nivel avanzado Virtual on Zoom Wednesdays, 6:30pm-8:30pm EST (20 hrs./10 min. break) Note: This level will start on Wednesday October 9th, and will run through December 18th IMPORTANT: ▪ Our virtual program is for Black, Indigenous and People of Color only. ▪ Non-NYC based participants can join virtually through Zoom. ▪ Please only apply if you are able to attend most of the classes. ▪ Each session can hold up to 15 participants. ▪ Cost of class $200-$400 sliding scale*. This includes all course materials. *$500 if contribution is paid for by employer or another institutional funding source.* NOTE: This program is for BIPOC-only and prioritizes working class, LGBTQ+ and Spanish bilinguals (heritage speakers of Spanish). As part of Algarabía's mission to make our courses accessible, we have sliding-scale rate options and payment plans available. ABOUT LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: At Algarabía Language Co-op, we see language learning as a meaningful, collaborative and transformative process reflected in our training in hands-on communicative and task-based language teaching approaches and our use of popular education in the language classroom. We seek to support the holistic development of all language learners as they become competent multilingual speakers. We devise classroom activities and use textbooks and other original didactic materials that meet our participants’ needs and that represent the linguistic and racial/ethnic diversity of the Spanish-speaking worlds. There is emphasis on validating U.S. Spanish and other varieties of Spanish often considered "non-standard." We actively include the use of "vos" as used in Central America. Spanish I: Spanish for Social Justice True Beginner - Español nivel básico introductorio For those with no formal training in the language. Covers grammar review; focus is on developing conversational skills, as well as analyzing and critically engaging with various varieties of Spanish through TV series and other media. - Saturdays, 2:00pm-5:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Spanish III: Spanish for Social Justice Intermediate - Español nivel intermedio Reviews topics covered in Spanish I & II courses. Covers grammar review, social movement vocabulary building, and text editing; focus is on developing conversational skills, as well as analyzing and critically engaging with various varieties of Spanish through film and other media. - Saturdays, 10:00am-1:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Spanish IV: Spanish for Social Justice High Intermediate - Español nivel intermedio alto Reviews topics covered in Spanish I-III courses. Covers grammar review and text editing; focus is on creative writing and reading fiction by Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean women; focus is on developing conversational skills, as well as analyzing and critically engaging with various varieties of Spanish through documentary and other media. - Saturdays, 2:00pm-5:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Spanish V: Spanish for Social Justice Advanced Level • Inmersión cultural y escritura creativa - Español para bilingües nivel avanzado En este curso exploraremos el español conversacional estudiando las diversas culturas en Latinoamérica y utilizando películas, música y su rica literatura. Spanish for Social Justice workshops are offered by Algarabía Language Co-op in partnership with Mayday Space. We offer a series of two in-person workshops: “Inclusivity in Action: Strengthening your knowledge of ‘lenguaje Inclusivo’ ” and “¿Abogacía, defensoría, o incidencia política? Español para organizadores.”

Through weekly social justice themes, and using a communicative and popular education approach, participants will improve their Arabic skills, and critically engage with various cultural productions in Arabic, including films, TV series, newsreels, short stories, and songs. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. Selected participants will be contacted by our instructors on a rolling basis and until a week before classes start. Late applications will be considered if spots are made available.
