Through weekly social justice themes, and using a communicative and popular education approach, participants will improve their Arabic skills, and critically engage with various Arabic cultural productions, including films, TV series, newsreels, and short stories. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in the U.S. and the Arab world. If you have any questions, you can write to us at [email protected] Arabic Language • Fall 2020 COURSES True Beginner - Arabic Language Course This course is designed for students who had no prior experience with learning Arabic. It introduces students to Arabic alphabet and covers the basics of reading, writing and grammar; focus is on pronunciation, oral fluency, colloquial Arabic and differences among varieties, in relation to formal Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Class meets virtually on Zoom Fridays, October 2nd - Jan 22nd - 6:00-9:00pm (45 hrs./15min. break) ▪ Each session can hold up to 15 participants. ▪ Cost of class $300-$400 sliding scale. This includes all course materials. High Beginner - Arabic Language Course Reviews topics covered in Beginner Arabic course. Expands vocabulary and idiomatic expressions; focus is on colloquial Arabic and differences among varieties; Class meets virtually on Zoom Sundays, October 4th - Jan 10th - 3:00-6:00pm (45 hrs./15min. break) ▪ Each session can hold up to 15 participants. ▪ Cost of class $300-$400 sliding scale. This includes all course materials. Conversational Intermediate - Arabic Language Course and Film Club Reviews topics covered in year 1 & 2 Arabic. Covers grammar review, vocabulary building, and text editing; focus is on developing conversational skills, as well as analyzing and critically engaging with various colloquial Arabic cultural productions. Class meets virtually on Zoom Thursdays, Oct 22nd - Dec 28th - 5:30-7:30pm in addition to biweekly film club meetings on Sundays at 6pm (30 hrs. total) ▪ Each session can hold up to 15 participants. ▪ Cost of class $200-$250 sliding scale. This includes all course materials. NOTE: This program prioritizes working class, BIPOC, queer, and heritage speakers of Arabic. As part of Algarabía's mission to make our courses accessible, we have sliding-scale rate options and payment plans available.
