​¡Bienvenides! Welcome to Spanish for Social Justice

Algarabía Language Co-op is excited to announce our in-person Spanish workshop series at Mayday Space starting this fall 2024! 

Spanish for Social Justice workshops are offered by Algarabía Language Co-op in partnership with Mayday Space. We offer a series of two in-person workshops: “Inclusivity in Action: Strengthening your knowledge of ‘lenguaje Inclusivo’ ” and “¿Abogacía, defensoría, o incidencia política? Español para organizadores.” 

• Inclusivity in Action: Strengthening your knowledge of “lenguaje Inclusivo”: Designed for intermediate and advanced learners, this workshop will guide you through the history, grammatical foundations, and limitations of inclusive language, focusing on the newest and most avant-garde options. Our goal is to foster greater awareness and practice of language justice.

​// Inclusividad en acción: ¡fortalece tus conocimientos del lenguaje inclusivo en español! Diseñado para participantes de nivel intermedio y avanzado, este taller te llevará a descubrir la historia, las bases gramaticales, límites del lenguaje inclusivo, enfocándonos en las opciones más vanguardistas. Todo con el objetivo de promover una mayor conciencia y práctica de la justicia del lenguaje.

• ¿Abogacía, defensoría, o incidencia política? Español para organizadores: Analizaremos las formas más efectivas de transmitir la terminología común de  organizaciones sin fines de lucro y de organización comunitaria en español, especialmente al organizar y traducir materiales relacionados con la educación, la vivienda y los derechos de la comunidad inmigrante.

Through weekly social justice themes and using a communicative and popular education approach, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working-class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. Our Inclusividad en acción workshop is designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills while Español para Organizadores will be conducted entirely in Spanish. Focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in New York City (Lenapehoking), one of the largest and most diverse Spanish-speaking cities in the world and the rest of Turtle Island and Abya Yala.

Fall 2024 WORKSHOP SERIES SCHEDULE:
Sundays, October 27th - November 17th

SPANISH FOR ORGANIZERS (4 WEEKS)
In-person at Mayday Space
11:00am - 2:00pm EST

LENGUAJE INCLUSIVO (4 WEEKS)
In-person at Mayday Space
3:00pm - 6:00pm EST

IMPORTANT:
▪ While this program is open to all, priority will be given to Black, Indigenous and People of Color. 
▪ Please only apply if you are able to attend most of the classes. 
▪ Each session can hold up to 15 participants.
▪ Cost of class $150-$250 sliding scale.* This includes all course materials.
▪ Half of your contribution will go directly to support Mayday Space for the use of their space. 

*$300 if paid for by employer or another institutional funding source.*

NOTE: In-person classes will follow all COVID safety guidelines at Mayday Space. We prioritize BIPOC, working class, LGBTQ+ and Spanish bilinguals (heritage speakers of Spanish). As part of Algarabía's mission to make our courses accessible, we have sliding-scale rate options and payment plans available. Once you complete the application and are selected, you will be given the opportunity to apply to these discounted rates individually. 

Selected participants will be contacted by Algarabía and will receive a link to complete their payment and secure their spot in the class.
