Spanish for Social Justice courses are offered by Algarabía Language Co-op in partnership with Mayday Space and co-sponsored by The People’s Forum. We offer courses at the BEGINNER and INTERMEDIATE levels of fluency to those interested in topics of social justice, politics, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes, and using a communicative and popular education approach, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various Latinx and Latin American cultural productions (centered around the lived experiences of working class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent). These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in New York City, one of the largest and most diverse Spanish-speaking cities in the world, the rest of the U.S. and Latin America. Algarabía Language Co-op is offering a 10-week community interpreting and translation training for advanced Spanish bilinguals (speakers of Spanish with a high level of fluency and proficiency).
These trainings are designed for those interested in learning more about interpreting and translation in social justice spaces and language justice work using real life scenarios. Our goals are 1) to increase local language justice capacity among grassroots groups and community spaces; 2) to provide participants with useful work skills they can continue to develop; and 3) to introduce a social justice framework to understand the role of interpreters and translators in creating participatory and inclusive community spaces. Spanish bilinguals are folks who grew up with Spanish being spoken at home or in their home community but were systematically denied access to bilingual education. |
