To register, click HERE Spanish for Social Justice courses are offered by Algarabía Language Co-op in partnership with The People’s Forum. We offer courses at the BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, and ADVANCED levels of fluency to those interested in topics of social justice, politics, and culture. Through weekly social justice themes, and using a communicative and popular education approach, participants will improve their Spanish skills and critically engage with various cultural productions centered around the lived experiences of working class people of Indigenous and African descent on the continent. These courses are designed for folks at different levels of fluency in their productive (speaking, writing) and receptive (listening and reading) skills. Special focus will be given to learning vocabulary and community organizing terminology relevant to contemporary social movements in New York City (Lenapehoking), one of the largest and most diverse Spanish-speaking cities in the world and the rest of Turtle Island and Abya Yala. All courses focus on the use of inclusive, gender-neutral and anti-racist language. There is emphasis on validating U.S. Spanish and other varieties of Spanish often considered "non-standard." We actively include the use of "vos" as used in Central America. *Times are in Eastern Standard Time (EST) / New York, New York VIRTUAL COURSES (8 WEEKS) • February 1st, 2025 - March 22nd, 2025 Spanish I: Spanish for Social Justice True Beginner - Español nivel básico introductorio Virtual on Zoom Saturdays, 10:00am-1:00pm EST (24 hrs./15 min. break) Description: For those with no formal training in the language.
